Llewellyn how green was my valley5/21/2023 Ford has endeavored with eminent success to give graphic substance to the gentle humor and melancholy pathos, the loveliness and aching sentiment, of the original. "How Green Was My Valley" is its title, and it opened last night at the Rivoli.Persons who have read the haunting novel by Richard Llewellyn from which the story is derived will comprehend at its mention the deeply affecting quality of this film. Yet out of the homely virtues of a group of Welsh mining folk-and out of the modest lives of a few sturdy leaders in their midst-Darryl Zanuck, John Ford and their associates at Twentieth Century-Fox have fashioned a motion picture of great poetic charm and dignity, a picture rich in visual fabrication and in the vigor of its imagery, and one which may truly be regarded as an outstanding film of the year. Human character in its purer, humbler aspects is not generally considered enough. The majesty of plain people and the beauty which shines in the souls of simple, honest folk are seldom made the topics of extensive discourse upon the screen.

Laura by vera caspary5/21/2023 " Laura will beguile and unsettle readers: a love story with a sinister underside. achieving a kind of perfection in its balance between low motives and high style." -Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun Times Brava!" -Otto Penzler, Owner, The Mysterious Bookshop "Everyone loves the movie, of course, but it is now possible again to read this stunning novel with one of the great surprise moments in the history of mystery fiction. Vera Caspary Laura Hardcover Januby Vera Caspary (Author) 16 ratings See all formats and editions Hardcover 10.47 6 Used from 10.00 2 Collectible from 89.00 Paperback from 20.00 2 Used from 20.00 Mass Market Paperback from 35.00 1 Collectible from 35.00 Board book 11.00 1 Used from 11.00 1944 bce, hardcover. A top-drawer mystery." - The New York Times Caspary (1899-1987), who worked in advertising as a young woman before becoming a prolific author of novels and screenplays, knew that world well and delighted in satirizing it." - The Washington Post The novel's third strength is Caspary's having set a noirish crime story in the Manhattan haute monde of ad agencies, fancy restaurants, and society folk as odious as they are self-satisfied. Its second strength is an ingenious plot twist that I won't spoil. The first is Waldo Lydecker, Laura Hunt's mentor, the vain deliciously nasty newspaper columnist who narrates. " -Robert Polito, author of Savage Art: A Biography of Jim Thompson "Vera Caspary's gift was perhaps more subtle, and deadly. This 1942 psychological thriller is as gripping and brilliantly constructed as the Preminger film. Vera Louise Caspary (Novem June 13, 1987) was an American writer of novels, plays, screenplays, and short stories. No man could resist her charms-not even the hardboiled NYPD detective sent to investigate her murder. Laura was the ideal "modern woman" and the ultimate femme fatale.

The magician of lublin book5/20/2023 Within minutes, Yasha can veer from contentment to despair: Should he leave his wife? Should he be happy with what he has and force himself to surrender his destructive, delightful, maddening sexual freedom? He sleeps with Magda, his assistant he sleeps with a woman of ill repute who might be a whore he sleeps with a beautiful, new acquaintance, and he eyes this new woman’s adolescent daughter. He has a mostly tolerable marriage and an interesting job he has food and talent, and a wife who is willing to forgive his many dalliances. Yasha is torn between the demands of fidelity and the urge to explore the world. It argues for a slower, more thoughtful way of life it seems to say, “Notice the world and thank God, thank someone, for the miracle that is your own frustrating, difficult life.” What is a man’s obligation to the people he loves? Is freedom a curse or a blessing? How should anyone go about designing and enacting a useful, happy life? Singer’s trademark empathy and sense of wonder turn this novel into something more than an odd, idiosyncratic, fictional biography. As Yasha’s problems multiply, the tone of the novel becomes very dark, and Singer raises several troubling questions. In The Magician of Lublin, Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer tells the story of Yasha, a talented man who simply cannot control himself. |
